Agents
Agents are the core of BuildVoiceAI. Each agent is an AI voice assistant configured with a personality, prompt, voice, and optional phone number. Agents handle phone conversations autonomously — answering questions, booking appointments, qualifying leads, or performing whatever task you define in their prompt.
The Agents Page
Navigate to Agents in the left sidebar to see all your agents. The page displays agents as cards, each showing:
- Agent name — The name you gave the agent.
- Provider badge — Which voice provider powers the agent (Retell, Vapi, or Bland).
- Status indicator — Green for active, gray for inactive.
- Assigned client — The client this agent belongs to, if any.
- Phone number — The assigned phone number, if any.
Filtering and Search
Use the controls at the top of the Agents page to find specific agents:
- Search — Type in the search bar to filter agents by name.
- Client filter — Select a client from the dropdown to show only agents assigned to that client.
Active vs. Inactive Agents
- Active agents can receive inbound calls and be used for outbound calls. They are fully operational.
- Inactive agents are paused. They will not answer calls or appear in call initiation workflows. Use this to temporarily disable an agent without deleting it.
You can toggle an agent’s status from the agent editor or directly from the agents list.
Creating Agents
There are two ways to create a new agent:
- Manual creation — Fill in a form with the agent’s name, prompt, voice, and settings.
- AI Agent Builder — Describe what you need in plain language and let AI generate the configuration.
Managing Agents
Click on any agent card to open the Agent Editor, where you can:
- Edit the agent’s prompt, voice, and settings
- Assign or change the phone number
- Add a knowledge base for reference material
- View call history for this agent
- Configure the website widget
- Enable AI prompt suggestions
