Make Your First Call

Now that you’ve created an agent, it’s time to hear it in action. BuildVoiceAI lets you make test calls directly from the browser using your microphone.

Starting a Test Call

  1. Navigate to Agents in the left sidebar.
  2. Click on the agent you want to test to open its detail page.
  3. Click the Test Call button.

Browser Permissions

The first time you test a call, your browser will ask for microphone access. Click Allow to grant permission. BuildVoiceAI needs your microphone to establish the voice call.

If you accidentally denied microphone access, you can re-enable it in your browser settings. In Chrome, click the lock icon in the address bar, then set Microphone to Allow.

During the Call

Once connected, you’ll see a call interface with:

  • Call timer — Shows how long the call has been running.
  • Audio visualization — Indicates when you or the agent is speaking.
  • End Call button — Click to hang up.

Speak naturally as if you were a customer calling the business. The agent will respond based on the prompt you configured. Try testing different scenarios:

  • Ask about business hours or services
  • Request to book an appointment
  • Ask a question the agent doesn’t have the answer to
  • Try interrupting the agent mid-sentence
💡

Use headphones during test calls to avoid audio feedback. If the agent hears its own voice through your speakers, it may respond to itself.

Ending the Call

Click the End Call button to hang up. The call will take a few seconds to process.

Reviewing the Call

After the call ends, you can review the results on the agent’s detail page or in the Calls section:

  • Transcript — A full text transcript of the conversation, showing both your speech and the agent’s responses with timestamps.
  • Recording — An audio playback of the entire call. Click play to listen back.
  • Call Details — Duration, status, and any metadata from the voice provider.

Transcripts and recordings may take 10–30 seconds to appear after the call ends, depending on the voice provider’s processing time.

Understanding Costs

Test calls use your voice provider’s API and count toward their usage billing:

  • Retell AI — Billed per minute based on your Retell plan.
  • Vapi — Billed per minute based on your Vapi plan.
  • Bland.ai — Billed per minute based on your Bland plan.
  • Managed accounts — Billed at $0.15/min through BuildVoiceAI.

Test calls are typically short (under a minute), so costs are minimal, but be aware they are not free.

Troubleshooting

Call won’t connect

  • Check that your microphone is not muted at the system level.
  • Make sure you granted microphone permission in the browser.
  • Verify your voice provider API key is still valid in SettingsIntegrations.

Agent doesn’t respond

  • Ensure the agent is set to Active.
  • Check that your voice provider account has sufficient credits.
  • Try refreshing the page and starting a new call.

Audio quality is poor

  • Use headphones to eliminate echo.
  • Close other applications that might be using your microphone.
  • Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
